Project Type: Urban Rail Transit – Depot Electrical Infrastructure

Location: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Commissioning Year: 2024

Status: Completed

Products Supplied: Hot-Dip Galvanized Cable Trays, Conduits (Electrical Raceways), Grounding Wires

Project Overview

The Addis Ababa Light Rail Transit (AALRT) is the first urban rail transit system in East Africa, marking a milestone in the region's transportation infrastructure development. Operated by Ethiopian Railways Corporation, the light rail system serves millions of passengers annually and plays a vital role in the city's public transportation network.

For the depot electrical systems of this landmark project, Burkaf supplied hot-dip galvanized cable trays, conduits, and grounding wires. The products were provided through China Railway Engineering Corporation (CREC), the main contractor and procurement entity for the project.

Challenges

  • High-Altitude Climate Conditions
Addis Ababa is located at an elevation of approximately 2,355 meters (7,726 feet) above sea level. The high-altitude environment presents unique challenges, including lower air pressure, higher solar radiation, and significant temperature fluctuations between day and night.

  • Temperature Variations
The region experiences substantial daily temperature swings, which can cause thermal expansion and contraction of materials. Cable management products must accommodate these variations without compromising structural integrity or electrical continuity.

  • Long-Term Operational Reliability
As a critical public transportation asset, the light rail depot requires electrical systems that can operate reliably for decades with minimal maintenance. Products must resist corrosion and maintain performance under local environmental conditions.

  • Dust and Environmental Exposure
The depot environment involves exposure to dust, vehicle vibrations, and occasional moisture. Cable trays, conduits, and grounding systems must be robust enough to withstand these conditions.

  • International Procurement Standards
As a project managed by CREC, the procurement followed international quality standards, requiring suppliers to demonstrate consistent quality control and reliable delivery capabilities.

Solutions Provided by Burkaf

Hot-Dip Galvanized Cable Trays

Burkaf supplied hot-dip galvanized cable trays with excellent corrosion resistance, suitable for Addis Ababa's high-altitude climate. The hot-dip galvanized finish provides:

  • Superior protection against rust and environmental degradation

  • High mechanical strength for depot applications

  • Long service life with minimal maintenance requirements

Electrical Conduits (Raceways)

Rigid steel conduits with hot-dip galvanized finish were provided for protecting individual cable runs. The conduits offer:

  • Mechanical protection for cables in exposed areas

  • Resistance to dust and moisture ingress

  • Easy installation and maintenance access

Grounding Wire System

Dedicated grounding wires and connectors were supplied to ensure complete electrical continuity across the cable tray system and connection to the depot's main grounding grid. This meets international electrical safety standards and protects both equipment and personnel.

Adaptability to Local Conditions

All products were selected and tested to perform reliably under Addis Ababa's high-altitude conditions, including:

  • Thermal expansion accommodation through proper joint design

  • Consistent performance across daily temperature swings

  • Durable finish resistant to solar radiation exposure

Project Results

  • The Addis Ababa Light Rail Transit depot electrical systems were successfully completed and commissioned in 2024.

  • Burkaf's hot-dip galvanized cable trays, conduits, and grounding wires provided reliable electrical infrastructure for the depot, earning recognition from CREC and Ethiopian Railways Corporation.

  • The products have demonstrated stable performance under high-altitude climate conditions and daily temperature variations.

  • The project contributed to the safe and reliable operation of East Africa's first urban rail transit system.

Project Value

This successful project demonstrates Burkaf's capability in rail transit infrastructure, particularly in challenging high-altitude environments. The combination of hot-dip galvanized cable trays, conduits, and grounding wires provided a complete and durable electrical support solution for the light rail depot. Burkaf continues to serve transportation infrastructure projects worldwide, delivering products engineered for local climate conditions and long-term reliability.
