Project Type: Airport Infrastructure – Terminal Electrical Systems
Location: Dhaka, Bangladesh
Project Year: 2025
Status: In Progress
Products Supplied: Cable Trays, Perforated Cable Trays, Seismic Supports (Seismic Bracing)
Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (DAC) in Dhaka, Bangladesh, is undergoing a major expansion with the construction of Terminal 3 – one of the largest infrastructure projects in the country's history. The new terminal is designed to significantly increase passenger capacity, enhance operational efficiency, and position the airport as a regional aviation hub in South Asia.
Burkaf was selected to supply cable trays, perforated cable trays, and seismic supports for the Terminal 3 electrical systems. The products are supplied through Mitsubishi Corporation, the main contractor for the project, and must meet stringent international airport safety and reliability standards.
High Safety Standards for International Airports
Airport electrical systems must comply with rigorous international safety codes, including fire safety, fault tolerance, and emergency system reliability. Cable management solutions must support these requirements while maintaining orderly cable routing.
Power and Low-Voltage System Segregation
Modern airport terminals require extensive low-voltage systems for baggage handling, security screening, passenger information displays, communications, and building automation. These must be properly segregated from power cables to prevent electromagnetic interference and ensure system reliability.
Seismic Protection Requirements
While Bangladesh is not typically associated with high seismic activity, modern building codes require seismic bracing for critical infrastructure to protect against rare but potential earthquake events. Airport terminal electrical systems must remain operational during emergencies.
High-Density Cable Routing in Terminal Environments
Terminal 3 features complex cable layouts above ceilings, in service corridors, and within equipment rooms. The cable tray system must accommodate high volumes while maintaining accessibility for future maintenance and upgrades.
Large-Scale Project Coordination
As one of Bangladesh's largest infrastructure projects, Terminal 3 involves multiple international contractors and strict construction schedules. Suppliers must demonstrate reliable delivery capability and effective coordination with the main contractor, Mitsubishi Corporation.
Burkaf supplied solid-bottom cable trays for main power cable routing throughout the terminal. These trays provide:
Robust support for heavy power cables
Protection against physical damage
Clean, organized routing for main electrical feeders
Perforated (ventilated) cable trays were provided for low-voltage and data cabling, including:
Baggage handling system controls
Security and surveillance systems
Passenger information displays
Communication and network infrastructure
Building automation and HVAC controls
The perforated design allows for easy cable securing with zip ties, improved heat dissipation, and flexible routing for frequent cable additions or changes.
A complete seismic support system was provided, including C-channels, seismic clamps, and bracing components. The system is engineered to:
Withstand seismic forces per international building codes
Protect critical electrical cabling during earthquake events
Ensure post-event functionality of essential airport systems
Meet airport safety certification requirements
By combining solid-bottom trays for power cables and perforated trays for low-voltage systems, Burkaf enabled proper separation within the overall cable management layout, reducing electromagnetic interference and simplifying system identification for maintenance personnel.
The Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport Terminal 3 expansion project is currently in progress, with Burkaf supplying cable trays, perforated cable trays, and seismic supports in coordination with Mitsubishi Corporation. The project is scheduled for completion as part of the broader terminal construction program.
This ongoing project demonstrates Burkaf's capability in large-scale airport infrastructure. Modern airport terminals present unique challenges – segregation of power and low-voltage systems, seismic resilience, and compliance with international safety standards – all of which require specialized cable support solutions. Burkaf's comprehensive product portfolio, including solid-bottom trays, perforated trays, and seismic bracing systems, addresses the complete needs of airport electrical infrastructure.
